From the High Seas to the Boardroom – Master Mariner SC Chan’s Successful Career Journey
With a Master’s in Business Administration, Finance, and Marketing from the University of Leicester and completing an Executive Management Program at Penn State University of Pennsylvania under his belt, SC Chan is a seasoned veteran of the marine transportation business.
Beginning his career at sea, Mr. Chan qualified as a master mariner from the Government of Great Britain in 1987, before joining Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) in Hong Kong and Japan. Here, he served as Fleet Captain, and later as a member of OOCL’s Headquarters in Hong Kong, where he was responsible for operations, Audit & Risk, Consortium, and Corporate Strategic Planning. He was even part of the Steering Committee that led to the formation of the Global Alliances Consortium, comprising five major international shipping lines.
In 1997, Mr. Chan was appointed Regional Operation Director of OOCL Singapore, and later as the Regional Managing Director in 2004, providing oversight to over 30 countries in South East Asia, Africa, South, and West Asia.
2015 saw him serving as CEO of China Sonangol International Singapore, managing operations in oil and gas, industrial, infrastructure, mining, real estate, commodities, and transportation.
In 2018, Mr. Chan was appointed to the Board of Westports, the main gateway for container and conventional cargo in central Peninsular Malaysia. As a Board Member of WMSB, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Westports, his experience and expertise were invaluable. He was subsequently honored with the title of Senior Independent Non-Executive Director on 1st March 2022.
Since retiring from active day-to-day operations management, Mr. Chan has still kept a close eye on the marine transportation business, offering his expertise as a well-versed advisor.
