Tanger-Med Port

Tanger-Med Port is the largest container port in Morocco and the country’s main maritime gateway. Located in the city of Tangier, on the Strait of Gibraltar, the Tanger-Med Port Authority operates the port. Some significant towns near Tanger-Med Port are Rabat, Casablanca, Fes, and Marrakesh. With a total area of 2,200 hectares, the port has four container terminals, a roll-on/roll-off terminal, a general cargo terminal, a liquid bulk terminal, and a fishing port. It has a capacity of 8 million TEUs and can handle the world’s largest container ships. The port is a critical element of the Tanger-Med Special Economic Zone, which was created to boost economic development in northern Morocco. The zone offers some tax and customs incentives to businesses operating within it. The port handles many imports and exports, including agricultural products, phosphates, chemicals, vehicles, and consumer goods. It is also a popular destination for cruise ships, with over 500,000 passengers visiting each year.

In order to export or import products through the Tanger-Med Port, all shipments must be properly labeled and documented. The Moroccan Ministry of Agriculture must also inspect and certify all products. A certificate of origin and a license may be required for specific products. A permit is also necessary to ship live animals.
